When I was in university, I used to think everyone was motivated by purpose. Well, there are grades, money, the cheers of others, getting a great job after school, and so on. I was dead wrong! Is it possible for a person to have no passion in life? Let’s be real here.
Have you ever asked yourself, “What am I even good at? What am I most enthused about in life?”
Sometimes too, being good at almost everything can seem like a curse, especially while deciding where to focus your abilities or at least where to get started in life.
Whatever these may mean to you, whether or not you feel fulfilled, can be attributed to a myriad of reasons and phases of our lives.
While some are trying to survive, others seek approval and, lastly, fulfilment in discovering their purpose in life.
Despite these, however, some people seem to go through life without excitement or passion for anything.
But does this absence exist, or is it just a misconception? Let us look into this intriguing question.
No Passion in Life —What Does It Mean to Be Passionate?
Passion is defined as a profound excitement, fervour, or zeal for anything. It can take many forms, including interests, occupations, relationships, or causes. Many people rely on passion to guide their decisions, activities, and objectives. However, the kind and intensity of passion can differ greatly from person to person.

Factors Influencing Passion
Anyone can experience passion in different ways. These include;
1. Life Circumstances
Are you a Dbee (spoilt child) or you went to cito (more locally inclined)? It’s all about exposure. External factors such as upbringing, education, socioeconomic status, and cultural background can greatly impact one’s opportunities for different passions. Eg. Skating, horse-riding, sky diving, hiking, playing in the mud, “chaskele” or “Aanto Akyire”.
Non-exposure could also trigger intense interest later on and that could lead to passion.
2. Personality Traits
Introverts, for example, may communicate their passions differently than extroverts do. Some may have quieter hobbies centred on reflection or creation. E.g., It is not unusual to find talkative people talented at holding radio discussions, lecturers, or TED Talk speakers, though these are skills that can be learned by introverts.

3. Mental Health and General Well-Being
Who better to understand how it feels to be depressed, suicidal or abused than a survivor?

4. Embracing a Passionate Life
This means consciously deciding to be passionate about anything you do. Make it worthwhile. The “if it must be done, it must be done well” attitude!

You may discover your purpose soon or later in life, or you may live for your purpose now. Just know that God has gifted everyone with unique abilities that make the world a better place. To identify yours and harness it to experience fulfilment and bless others with it makes all the difference.
The idea that someone can have no passion in life is a myth that fails to capture the complexity of human experiences. While passion may not always manifest in obvious or conventional ways, it exists in varying degrees and forms within each individual. By embracing curiosity, self-discovery, and an open-minded approach to life, anyone can cultivate a sense of purpose and fulfilment, regardless of their passions. So, rather than searching for a single defining passion, let’s celebrate the rich tapestry of interests and experiences that make life truly meaningful.
